Protecting Birds Restoring Habitats, Reviving the Wild Together
SafeNest Indonesia is a long-term conservation initiative dedicated to protecting endangered bird species, restoring critical habitats, and empowering local communities to become active guardians of their natural heritage through science, education, sustainable livelihoods, and meaningful conservation action. Former bird trappers now use their deep knowledge of Java's forests as nest guardians and field monitors, protecting the birds they once depended on capturing and helping restore balance to the wild they know so well.

SafeNest Indonesia focuses on connected conservation actions that move from field monitoring and protection to education, recovery, livelihoods, and public participation.
- Monitoring endangered bird populations and their habitats

- Developing rescue, rehabilitation, and release facilities for confiscated or injured birds
- Promoting conservation education in schools and local communities

- Supporting species recovery programs for critically endangered birds, including the Javan Green Magpie, Javan Blue-flycatcher, Rufous-fronted Laughingthrush, and Grey-backed Mynah
- Developing a bird nest adoption platform to encourage global communities to take part in nest protection
Our Story
SafeNest Indonesia is a long-term conservation initiative protecting endangered birds and restoring the ecosystems they depend on, with initial priority areas in the Mount Slamet-Dieng Plateau and the Belambangan UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In one of the world's richest centers of bird diversity, the project responds to growing threats from habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, and unsustainable harvesting.
Through community-based conservation, SafeNest connects wildlife protection with education, sustainable livelihoods, habitat restoration, and local leadership. Field surveys, patrols, conservation groups, and rehabilitation programs are already strengthening protection in priority habitats while helping communities become long-term stewards of their landscapes.
Some of SafeNest's most committed guardians once relied on trapping wild songbirds for income. Their knowledge of forest trails, bird calls, nests, and seasons now helps locate and protect endangered birds from disturbance and illegal collection.
Through the BirdNest Adoption Program, supporters help fund this transformation: protecting vulnerable birds while helping local communities build livelihoods rooted in conservation rather than exploitation.
